Olivier Giroud: ‘My body is ready to play a few more years at the best level’

Olivier Giroud is a man making up for lost time. Six months ago the Chelsea striker was out in the cold and fretting about losing his place in the France squad before Euro 2020. Opportunities to impress Frank Lampard with his unselfish hold-up play had dried up and Giroud, a target for Bordeaux, Internazionale, Lazio and Tottenham, was desperate for a move.

When the January transfer window closed with Giroud still at Chelsea, Lampard promised him a fresh start. Tammy Abraham was struggling with an ankle injury and Michy Batshuayi had disappointed. Giroud, who had made two league starts all season, was back. Scoring on his return to the side against Tottenham in February was a good start, and he was in his element by the time he pitched in wi…

Elanga hoping Forest can keep clinical edge against Brighton

Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga praised their clinical nature for their shock win at Liverpool and is hoping to carry into their trip to Brighton.

Forest have made an impressive start to the Premier League season, with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool – their first win at Anfield in 55 years – the pick of their results.

They are unbeaten so far, with two wins and two draws under their belts, leaving them seventh in the table.

Despite the positivity currently surrounding the club, Elanga is not getting ahead of himself.

Since the start of pre-season, the atmosphere has been good, Elanga told BBC Radio 5 Live. We went to Liverpool and not many teams can beat them and play the way we did – we got rewarded with it at the end.

We have start…

More prolific than Salah: Preston sign 2018´s top scorer Stockley from Exeter

Preston North End have signed Jayden Stockley from Exeter City, the striker having scored more goals in English football in 2018 than any other player.

Stockley hit 20 League Two goals last term and has netted five times in his last three appearances to take his tally to 16 this season, earning a three-and-a-half-year deal with Championship club Preston.

The 25-year-old scored 29 league goals during 2018, one more than Liverpool s Mohamed Salah, and joins Preston for a reported £750,000 after the release clause in his Exeter contract was triggered.

Manager Alex Neil feels target man Stockley will give Preston, 17th in the Championship and winless in four matches, a fresh dimension in attack.

Spain swept by Euro 2008 fever as final nears

Spain was swept up in football fever Saturday one day ahead of its national team s Euro 2008 final against Germany in Vienna which fans were confident would lead to its first major title in over 40 years.

From Valencia to Valladolid, town halls across the country were setting up giant television screens in public squares to allow supporters to gather and watch the match while stores reported dwindling stocks of red and white Spanish flags and jerseys.

The only exceptions were Barcelona and Bilbao in separatist-minded Catalonia and the Basque Country where local officials as of Saturday had no plans to set up screens due to regional sensitivities, daily newspaper El Mundo reported.

On this day in 2019: Mauricio Pochettino sacked by Tottenham

Tottenham sacked manager Mauricio Pochettino on this day in 2019.

The sudden and unexpected decision came less than six months after the Argentinian had guided Spurs to the Champions League final.

Pochettino had been in charge for five-and-a-half years but paid the price for a poor start to the 2019-20 season.

He left Spurs 14th in the Premier League table after winning just three, and collecting only 14 points, from their opening 12 games of the campaign.

“Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing,” said chairman Daniel Levy.

“We were extremely reluctant to make this change. It is not a decision the board has taken lightly, nor in haste.”

Pochettino left S…

Super Bowl Picks and Predictions: Cincinnati's Storybook Run Ends Short

With kickoff right around the corner is the Cincinnati Bengals’ fairytale story about to come crumbling down on the grandest stage of all?

Super Bowl LVI has the vibe of a classic “David vs. Goliath” tale, as the Cinderella Bengals aim to best the glitz of the Los Angeles Rams. To heighten the drama, this battle will play out on the Rams’ home turf at SoFi Stadium.

Super Bowl odds hit the books with Los Angeles listed as a 4-point NFL betting favorite for tonight’s Big Game. That rose to -4.5 at some sportsbooks, with the bulk of the early money siding with the Rams, before Cincy rode a wave of support, moving back down. The Bengals, who have snared the greater ticket count, defeated a duo of top AFC seeds en route to the Super Bowl.
