data-mm-id=”_250xmomm7″>Tom Pelphrey deserved better. On Tuesday, when the Emmy nominations were announced, we learned he had been snubbed after turning in the performance of the year during the third season of Ozark. The 38-year-old actor played Ben Davis, the brother of Laura Linney's Wendy Byrde. He gave a haunting, heartbreaking performance as a man struggling in the throes of mental illness. He stole scenes left and right and, despite playing a supporting role, the season truly belonged to him. That's saying something when an actor is sharing the screen with the likes of Jason Bateman, Julia Garner and Linney. Pelphrey was tasked with playing a man suffering with bipolar disorder. When Ben is on his medication he's goofy, kind and loving with a big personality. He can be impulsive but is generally a good guy people enjoy being around. He shows up in the Ozarks to stay with his sister's family early in Season 3 and, for the most part, he blends in, growing especially close to Wendy's son, Jonah. He becomes the love interest of Byrde associate Ruth Langmore (Garner) and the two develop a sweet relationship. At least in the beginning. That love story increasingly feels doomed as the season progresses. A few episodes in, Ben decides stop taking his medication because it hinders his sexual performance with Ruth. After that fateful decision, he begins a descent into manic madness that can only end tragically. All along the way, Pelphrey is note-perfect in the role. He essentially plays three characters throughout the course of the season and nails each one. He played Ben on his medication as the goofy black sheep of the family. By midseason he was playing a man slowly changing while still largely holding a grip on reality. But by the end, he put a character on screen that had no sense of up or down, who had completely lost touch with rational thought and was on a path to self-destruction. Somehow, Pelphrey was believable the entire time. The changes are subtle and develop slowly before smacking the viewer in the face. It didn't feel like he was acting, he somehow found a way to inhabit the character. Pelphrey's incredible performance was highlighted in the penultimate episode of the season entitled Fire Pink. It opens on Ben rambling endlessly in the back of a cab. In a nearly five-minute monologue, the character's descent into mental illness is laid bare. Clearly what he's saying makes sense in his own mind but no sane human could understand his thoughts. He intensely tells anecdotes and opines on life to the silent cab driver. It was, without a doubt, the most powerful scene on television this year. The actor somehow perfectly unmasked bipolar disorder in that five minutes. Manic episodes like that are what so many deal with on a daily basis. It was raw. It was real. It was utterly devastating. Pelphrey deserved every accolade for that scene alone, but the rest of his work during the season was equally worthy of admiration. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences missed the memo on Pelphrey's performance. Somehow it slipped under the radar of Emmy voters despite widespread acclaim. He deserved better. It was a career-defining performance and it should have been recognized, not only with a nomination, but with a statue.

Arsenal have so far signed four first-team players this summer, and the fifth arrival, that of Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City, is believed to be imminent.
As expected, there are names who will be considered surplus to requirements, which means departures are likely to happen between now and the end of the transfer window. Manager Mikel Arteta has revealed as much.
We have a large squad, we have to make some decisions on the players that we re not going to be using consistently and be fair and straight with them.

Paulo Dybala announced his return to the Juventus starting line-up with a match-winning brace as the Serie A champions triumphed 3-1 at Verona.
Dybala was handed a start by head coach Massimiliano Allegri for the first time in four Serie A matches – his impressive early season form having collapsed amid calls from Juve vice-president Pavel Nedved for the 24-year-old to make sacrifices in his private life .
The former Palermo favourite s impact was peripheral to begin with, as Blaise Matuidi netted a sixth-minute opener and Gonzalo Higuain regularly threatened more punishment for second-bottom Verona.
But ex-Juve defender Martin Caceres elevated an all-action showing by firing home a long-range equaliser before the hour and Allegri s men were facing reaching th…

Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly could hold talks with Chelsea after revealing there has been no sign of a new contract offer from Napoli.
Koulibaly has been linked with a £23million move to Stamford Bridge, and the 24-year-old said talks with incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte may take place soon .
Despite making 33 league appearances for Napoli and helping them to a second-place Serie A finish in 2015-16, Koulibaly has been offered no assurances over his future at Stadio San Paolo beyond 2019, when his current contract expires.
Koulibaly told French newspaper L Equipe that a move was not his intention, though, saying: I was happy to sign a five-year contract with them I did very good things this season and there are proposals on the table.

Several top European clubs are showing interest in Feyenoord midfielder Tonny Vilhena, according to Voetbal International.
The 21-year-old appears to have set his sights on leaving De Kuip in the summer and he should have no shortage of offers.
Feyenoord coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst attempted to persuade Vilhena to extend his stay, but the youngster is far from happy with the club’s latest contract offer and is almost certain to leave at the end of the season.
FC Porto, Sevilla, Valencia and Hamburg are all keen on the footballer who has shown a great deal of potential since coming through the youth ranks at De Kuip.
Despite his fragile age, the youngster already has 111 Eredivisie appearances to his name, and has so far scored 15 goals.

The Polish Ekstraklasa should have started a fortnight ago, but thanks to on-going corruption investigations, not a single game has been played.
This will change shortly, as on Wednesday the two clubs still in limbo (Korona Kielce and Zaglebie Lubin) will find out what league they will be playing in for the 2008/09 season.

Pele has stoked the fire ahead of Saturday s friendly between Brazil and Argentina, claiming Neymar is a more complete player than Lionel Messi.
The two players will be the star attractions in New Jersey when the South American rivals clash, having already met on two occasions.
Messi was the winner both times, scoring a magnificent individual effort to secure Argentina s 1-0 victory over Brazil in 2010, before playing his part in a 4-0 thrashing of Santos in the Club World Cup final while in Barcelona colours.
Pele, writing for Argentine newspaper Ole, conceded the Barca star had the edge on the 20-year-old Santos starlet in terms of experience, but maintained that Neymar can do things on the pitch that were beyond Messi s grasp.

Los Angeles has emerged as a possible destination for 36-year-old Ibrahimovic, who is in the final six months of the contract extension he signed at United last August.
Ibrahimovic was linked with the Galaxy before he joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 and again prior to re-signing at Old Trafford following a serious knee injury suffered last season.
United manager Jose Mourinho said he would not stop Ibrahimovic from moving to the Galaxy, and responding to the speculation Tuesday, Schmid told LA Galaxy Insider: There s been a lot of talk about it in the past and it s something that maybe gets opened up again.

Competition: Champions League
Market: Manchester City to beat Basel
Odds:
The Champions League returns for more action in the biggest club competition in world football. Every side left in the competition will have aspirations of winning the whole thing, but they must put their best foot forward in the first-leg of their games and, with this in mind, Manchester City travel to face Basel on Tuesday.
Basel were very good in their Champions League group as they finished second in Group A. After six games they won four and lost two, scoring 11 goals and conceding five times. Their last five games saw the side win four times and lose once as they ended on 12 points. Basel already have good practice in facing a side from Manchester as they finished …
