Infantino gives Platini backing in FIFA ban fight

FIFA presidential hopeful Gianni Infantino has offered his backing to Michel Platini as the banned UEFA chief seeks to clear his name.

Platini, 60, withdrew from the race to succeed Sepp Blatter as the head of world football s governing body on Wednesday to continue his fight against an eight-year ban from the sport.

Both Platini and Blatter were handed the lengthy suspensions as a result of a disloyal payment made by the Swiss to the Frenchman in 2011, though both have persistently denied any wrongdoing.

UEFA general secretary Infantino, who is now clear to run for FIFA s top job after previously stating he would not campaign if Platini remained in the race, has lent his support to the former France international s efforts.

UEFA endorses Infantino as its FIFA presidential candidate

UEFA has unanimously endorsed Gianni Infantino s candidacy for the FIFA presidency at next month s elections.

Infantino entered the race to replace the suspended Sepp Blatter in October and the UEFA general secretary has been the favourite to secure his federation s nomination since president Michel Platini was provisionally suspended from all football activities alongside Blatter earlier that month.

Platini and Blatter are now serving eight-year bans in relation to a payment made from FIFA to the former France captain in February 2011.

Earlier this month, Platini confirmed the withdrawal of his FIFA presidential candidacy, clearing the way for UEFA to back Infantino following this week s Executive Committee meeting in Nyon.

Burnley 1-4 Manchester City: Jesus at the double as champions run riot

Gabriel Jesus rediscovered form in style as his double helped Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over Burnley that closed the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola described last season s 1-0 win at Turf Moor as being like a trip to the dentist , though Jesus brace ensured no pain for City this time around.

Thrust into City s line-up in the wake of Sergio Aguero s injury, Jesus scored either side of half-time to put the visitors in complete control, in the process ending his five-match scoreless streak in the league.

Jesus could have rounded off a hat-trick soon after netting his second, though his rare moment of profligacy did not prove costly – Rodri s thunderbolt making sure of the points.

Hamburg finally relegated amid ugly scenes

Hamburg s proud record of never being relegated came to an end on Saturday as they dropped into the second tier, which led to ugly protests from a number of their fans.

As the only club to have played in every Bundesliga season since its inception in 1963, supporters of the six-time German champions have proudly displayed a clock at Volksparkstadion which keeps a record of their top-flight status.

That will have to be stopped now, however, as their 2-1 home win over Borussia Monchengladbach was not enough to save them due to Wolfsburg thumping bottom club Cologne 4-1 to secure 16th and a play-off against Holstein Kiel of Bundesliga 2.

Wolfsburg came into the final round still in with a chance of securing 15th spot and guaranteed survival, but Freiburg s 2-0…

He´s not going to go – Solskjaer rules out January move for Pogba

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United will not sell Paul Pogba in the January transfer window.

Pogba has made just six appearances in all competitions this season, having not featured since a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on September 30.

The France midfielder has been struggling with a foot injury, but he is expected to make his return over the Christmas period.

With 18 months remaining on his current deal, Pogba – signed for £89.3million from Juventus in 2016 – has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and long-term admirers Real Madrid are among the reported suitors.

Ibrahimovic names his football GOAT, hits out at LeBron James

There is an age-old argument about which footballer is the greatest of all time: Pele or Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, or the alternative option named by Zlatan Ibrahimovic?

Although some may expect the charismatic Swedish star to bestow such an honour upon himself, the 39-year-old believes the all-time best is prolific Brazilian forward Ronaldo.

Ronaldo starred for PSV, Barcelona, Inter and Real Madrid during a distinguished 14-year European club career, claiming the Ballon d Or in 1997 and 2002, and earning countless other prizes and awards.

Il Fenomeno helped his nation lift the World Cup twice, in 1994 and 2002, and was once a runner-up in 1998, while scoring 62 goals in 98 international caps for the Selecao.

Any team would miss Salah and Mane, Klopp insists after Arsenal frustration

Jurgen Klopp does not believe there is any team that would not miss Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, after Liverpool felt the duo s absence against Arsenal.

Salah and Mane, along with midfielder Naby Keita, are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mane scored a last-gasp winner on Monday for Senegal against Zimbabwe, and he and Guinea s Keita go head-to-head when their nations face off on Friday.

Salah, meanwhile, was kept quiet as Egypt slipped to a 1-0 loss to Nigeria in their opening group game. The forward, who has netted 23 times across all competitions this season for Liverpool, had just four touches in the opposition box and managed just one attempt, which did hit the target, in Monday s game.
