GCC Champions League: Saham 3 Al Shabab 1

Saham are on course to reach the GCC Champions League final after beating Al Shabab 3-1 in the first leg of their semi-final in Muscat.

The Omani side are playing in the competition for the first time since 2011 and they continued their impressive group form when Mohsen Essence put them in front after 11 minutes at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Monday.

Saham doubled their lead six minutes into the second half, with striker Mohamed Al-Zeno this time on target to leave the visitors up against it.

Rashid Hassan halved the deficit just after the hour-mark, but they were unable to maintain the pressure and Saham extended their lead late on.

With a minute of normal time to play, Fahd Aljelbobe gave the home side some breathing space ahead of the second leg at Maktoum…

Galliani ´feels sorry´ for Allegri

Milan vice president Adriano Galliani admits he sympathises with sacked head coach Massimiliano Allegri.

The 46-year-old endured a torrid season in Serie A with Milan winning just five of their 19 league matches thus far, a return that leaves the club languishing in 11th place, well off the pace for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Allegri who had previously announced his intention to depart San Siro at the end of the season was relieved of his duties on Monday following Sunday s shock 4-3 defeat at Sassuolo.

The former Cagliari boss took the reins at Milan in 2010 and guided the side to the league title in 2011.

Having lost their crown to Juventus the following season, Milan endured a difficult campaign last year and needed a late resurgence to ensure Champi…

Manchester United confirm Schweinsteiger´s Chicago Fire switch

Manchester United have confirmed Bastian Schweinsteiger will join Major League Soccer team Chicago Fire, subject to a medical and a visa.

Chicago announced the transfer with statements from the 2014 World Cup winner and their coach Velijko Panuovic in the Chicago Tribune, which reported a one-year deal had been agreed.

In a statement on their official website on Tuesday, United said the move would go ahead and that their MLS counterparts were keen to finalise a swift transfer for the out-of-favour midfielder.

I am sad to leave so many friends at Manchester United but I am grateful to the club for allowing me the chance to take up the challenge at Chicago Fire, Schweinsteiger said on United s official website.

Canada v Honduras: Hoilett reluctant to be cast as saviour for revenge mission

Junior Hoilett has moved to quell expectations surrounding his long-awaited competitive debut as Canada prepare at host Honduras in the fourth round of CONCACAF World Cup qualification.

The 25-year-old QPR winger represented the country of his birth for the first time in last month s 1-1 friendly draw against Ghana  over four-and-a-half years on from rejecting his initial call-up.

Hoilett s Jamaican parentage made him eligible to play for the Caribbean nation, while he expressed a desire to represent England earlier in his career at Blackburn Rovers, only to fall foul of the Home Nations agreement.

Having played 87 minutes against Ghana, Hoilett is expected to start as Canada aim for revenge in their opening Group A match over a country that humiliated them 8-1…

Panama 1-0 United States: USA have streak snapped in World Cup qualifying shock

Panama celebrated a famous win as Sunday s 1-0 victory gave them their first CONCACAF World Cup qualifying triumph over the United States.

USA entered the away fixture unbeaten in eight World Cup qualifiers against Panama, including six wins, and enjoying a 13-match undefeated streak across all competitions.

But Panama had other ideas thanks to Anibal Godoy, whose 54th-minute header secured an unlikely victory in Panama City on the road to Qatar 2022.

In wild scenes, Godoy – who plays in MLS for Nashville – headed home Eric Davis corner at the near post.

Final from Panama. Next, Costa Rica on Wednesday in Columbus.

Netherlands boss De Boer not worried yet but admits ´things need to get better´

Frank de Boer admitted there is still plenty of room for improvement in his Netherlands team after they needed a late equaliser to draw 2-2 with Scotland.

Memphis Depay s 89th-minute free-kick made sure the Netherlands avoided defeat in the friendly fixture between two nations preparing for Euro 2020.

The influential forward had also scored in the first half, his left-footed volley cancelling out Jack Hendry s opener for a Scotland team left shorthanded following a positive coronavirus case within the squad.

Substitute Kevin Nisbet restored Scotland s lead soon after coming on as the Dutch looked defensively shaky when lining up in a wing-back formation, though De Boer made clear the squad had little time to work on systems ahead of the match in Faro.

Baggio delight at World Peace Award

Italian football great Roberto Baggio has won this year s World Peace Award, a special award bestowed by Nobel Peace Prize laureates.

Baggio, 43, said he was happier with this latest distinction than any of his on-field achievements, which included being crowned FIFA player of the year in 1993.

He was singled out for his long-time charity work, particularly in Myanmar in trying to win freedom for opposition keader Aung San Suu Kyi and also his fundraising for victims of the Haiti earthquake, according to the office of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.

Baggio, a convert to Buddhism, is to receive his accolade in the Japanese city of Hiroshima on Friday.

This is better than the Golden ball award, Baggio told Italian news agency Ansa. Compared wit…

Watford sack boss Valerien Ismael and place Tom Cleverley in interim charge

Watford have sacked head coach Valerien Ismael following Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Coventry and placed former midfielder Tom Cleverley in interim charge.

The Hornets were beaten 2-1 by the Sky Blues to leave them 13th in the Sky Bet Championship, well adrift of the play-off places and seven points above the relegation zone.

Ex-Barnsley and West Brom boss Ismael had been appointed to the job at Vicarage Road in May and signed a contract extension in October, but he has paid the price for a poor run of form.

Ismael was the 20th managerial appointment under the Pozzo family. Of his 41 games in charge, Watford won 12 and lost 15, with 14 draws.

Tom Cleverley will assume the position of Interim Head Coach at Vicarage Road.

Verratti urges PSG to seal new deal with Ibrahimovic

Marco Verratti believes Paris Saint-Germain should have no hesitation in offering an extended contract to star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The future of the enigmatic Sweden international remains a source of speculation at PSG, with his current deal in the French capital set to expire at the end of this season.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi told Le Figaro that negotiations with the 34-year-old club-record goalscorer were pencilled in for next month, but Ibrahimovic is unlikely to have a shortage of alternative suitors and he has also discussed the prospect of retiring to end a glittering professional career.

Italy midfielder Verratti has played alongside Ibrahimovic at the Parc des Princes since both men joined the club in 2012 and has no doubt that the former…

Colchester United 1 Tottenham 4: Chadli double sends Spurs to fifth round

Two goals from Nacer Chadli helped Tottenham to a 4-1 win over Colchester United in Saturday s FA Cup fourth-round clash.

The home side, rock-bottom of League One, lost two players to injury early on after a heavy collision between team-mates and struggled to settle in a first half dominated by Spurs.

Chadli s fine finish gave Mauricio Pochettino s side the lead they deserved and both Erik Lamela and captain Harry Kane should have made the advantage more comfortable by half-time.

Colchester sharpened up after the break, but the killer blow came in the 64th minute when Eric Dier s ambitious effort took a huge deflection before nestling in the far corner.

A header from Chadli made it 3-0 and, though Ben Davies scored an own goal just two minutes lat…
