Liverpool v Man City: The key figures in reigniting Guardiola´s title charge

Pep Guardiola does not enjoy press conferences at the best of times.

As he sat down, drew his hands across his face and squeezed together a furrowed brow after Manchester City s 5-2 defeat at home to Leicester City last September, he looked like he d rather be anywhere else in the world.

After 2-1 and 3-1 we were not strong enough to be stable and be patient, he said, having watched Riyad Mahrez fire his team into an early lead before they collapsed shambolically and gave away three penalties.

We started to think we were playing bad when we were not playing bad.

The lack of belief Guardiola eluded to owed much to City playing through a fog of bitter disappointment that still cloaked them following the 3-1 Champions League quarter-final defeat to Lyon t…

Chelsea 2-0 Brighton and Hove Albion: Lampard off the mark with first home Premier League win

A Jorginho penalty and a deflected strike from Willian earned Chelsea their first home Premier League win under Frank Lampard as they beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 on Saturday.

Lampard s men had drawn two and lost one of their opening three matches at Stamford Bridge this term, but they deservedly got off the mark on this occasion.

Brighton, now beaten in all nine of their league meetings with Chelsea, survived an onslaught on their goal in the first half but Adam Webster gifted the Blues a spot-kick early in the second half.

Jorginho converted from 12 yards after Webster had brought down Mason Mount, who pounced on the defender s heavy first touch in the box, while Willian added a second 14 minutes from time to send Chelsea up to sixth in the table.

Modric disappointed by Ronaldo´s Madrid departure

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric thanked Cristiano Ronaldo for his extraordinary contribution to the club as he rued the star forward s sale to Juventus.

Ronaldo completed a sensational €100million switch to the Serie A champions earlier this week, bringing an end to his successful nine-season stay in Madrid.

He leaves as Los Blancos all-time top scorer and a four-time Champions League winner with the team he joined in 2009.

Modric, who is set to captain Croatia in the World Cup final on Sunday, conceded his disappointment over the departure of the Portugal great.

My wish was for Cristiano to stay. He is unique and it is a pity he has left, the 32-year-old told reporters after Croatia s semi-final win over England.

I thank him for everythin…

Man Utd boss Solskjaer could ban Bruno Fernandes from international duty

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is weighing up whether to block Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes from travelling with Portugal during the international break due to COVID-19 quarantine.

Portugal are scheduled to play three World Cup qualifiers this month – at home to Azerbaijan (March 24), away to Serbia (March 27) and on the road against Luxembourg (March 30).

Linking up with Portugal would mean Fernandes would be subject to a 10-day quarantine in a government-approved hotel upon his return to the United Kingdom amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It would also leave Solskjaer without the services of Fernandes against Brighton and Hove Albion (April 3) and Tottenham (April 10).

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Real Madrid: Benzema leaves it late as leaders´ wait for Derbi win goes on

Karim Benzema s late equaliser rescued a 1-1 draw for Real Madrid at rivals Atletico Madrid and extended their unbeaten run in El Derbi to 10 LaLiga matches.

Atleti are the side in the ascendancy in Spain s top flight this season, but they have been second best in their own city in recent years and could not end a poor sequence in this fixture on Sunday.

Luis Suarez s 10th league strike against Madrid had appeared enough for a precious victory, yet missed chances came back to bite Diego Simeone s men as the long-serving Atleti coach was denied a club-record 309th win in the job.

Benzema, fit again to captain the side, marked his 371st LaLiga appearance – a record among Madrid s non-Spanish players – with an 88th-minute leveller to maintain the champions int…

BREAKING NEWS: Kompany appointed as Anderlecht player-manager

Vincent Kompany will take on a player-manager role at Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht after calling time on his 11-year spell at Manchester City.

It was confirmed on Sunday that Kompany would be leaving Premier League champions City, with the Belgium defender ending his career at the club by winning a domestic treble.

Now his next move has been revealed, with the 33-year-old announcing that he is to take his first steps into coaching at Anderlecht, the club where he started his career, signing a three-year deal as player-manager.

And Kompany says Pep Guardiola has served as the inspiration for his decision to re-join Anderlecht, stating that the City boss him rediscover his love for football.

The end of this season couldn’t be more memorable. I hav…

Lewandowski back in full training with Bayern

Robert Lewandowski has returned to full Bayern Munich training after recovering from knee ligament damage.

Bayern s superstar striker has not played since Poland s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Andorra on March 28.

But after nearly a month out, the club confirmed on Wednesday Lewandowski completed the majority of full training , with coach Hansi Flick optimistic he could feature at Mainz on Saturday.

Bayern also had Serge Gnabry, returning from coronavirus, and Corentin Tolisso, out since February with a thigh injury, back in light training.

The defending Bundesliga champions can clinch another title this weekend and would be delighted to welcome back Lewandowski.

Despite missing several weeks, the 32-year-old still leads all players in Europe…

Five years on – Pogba´s Man Utd record and what the future holds for France star

On August 9, 2016, Manchester United completed a deal that was expected to transform them back into title regulars.

Paul Pogba – who had left United in 2012 – arrived in an £89.3million (€105m) deal from Juventus, a then-world record transfer fee.

Five years on, Pogba seems to be at something of a crossroads in not just his United career, but as a player altogether.

Like in 2016, Pogba heads into the 2021-22 season on the back of an impressive European Championship with France.

Unlike in 2016, Les Bleus failed to go deep in the competition, dropping out in the last 16 stage to Switzerland.

That game in June perhaps provided the perfect summary of Pogba the player. A global superstar in his own right, the 28-year-old has perhaps never hit …

Easy – I used to cover for Dani Alves! Navas explains shift to full-back under Guardiola

Jesus Navas says years of covering for Dani Alves at Sevilla made it easy for him to become a full-back for Manchester City.

Having spent his earlier career as a winger, Navas was deployed as an emergency right-back in Pep Guardiola s first season in charge at the Etihad Stadium due to injuries.

Navas returned to Sevilla after the 2016-17 season and has mostly been used in defence for club and country since, including in all four LaLiga appearances this season and the 2-1 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Romania on September 5.

The 33-year-old says it was a natural progression for him to become a defender, partly because of his experience of covering for the marauding Dani Alves during the Brazilian s time at Sevilla between 2002 and 2008.

There were player…

Pogba and Fernandes do little to hush compatibility concerns as Arsenal suffocate Man United

Thick and fast come the questions and concerns for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the latest exhibition of Manchester United s apparent mediocrity coming in a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal in the manager s 100th match at the helm.

Sunday s result means United have gone winless in their first four home matches of a domestic league campaign for the first time since 1972-73, with the Red Devils form showing signs of trouble even before Arsenal s latest visit.

But the manner of United s performance in contrast to that of Mikel Arteta s Gunners will arguably provide the greatest concern, with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba once again seemingly unable to co-exist effectively.

United came into the contest on a temporary crest of positivity following their 5-0 demolition of RB …
